Tom Lyle (aka Tom Cleaver in Beaver) eventually ended up in Government Issue. Beaver, originally recorded these tracks for the now “Killed By Death”, DC HardCore 7” that had an original press of 300.

Beaver started out as a solo project of Tom Lyle’s. Then it became a real band, albeit short lived. Here’s a brief story Tom shared with me.

I was in a DC progressive/new waver band, but became VERY bored with the whole scene. After seeing the Dead Kennedys in April 81 at the 9:30, and then the Government Issue/Youth Brigade/Minor Threat show in June 81 at the 9:30 I started making home demo tapes of me playing all the instruments in the most hardcore style I could come up with. I wanted to get a band together to play out live and used they rhythm section from Square One, the awful band I was in at the time. Then we got asked to record a record for Choice Cuts.

That’s how it was. Hear a band, see a band, change your life… just like that.

Dr. Strange has reissued this on LP, (400 on black vinyl, 100 on white vinyl) and added some demo tracks, also recorded in 1981.

This is rudimentary hardcore, typical for the early 1980s. Tom Lyle eventually ended being an inspiration for me on guitar. I love his guitar style on all of the Government Issue material. I own a Marshall because of him. This is the roots, the developmental stage. Having been involved in hardcore during this time period, I have a certain affinity for all of this material.

Considering the early stage of hardcore, how fast this genre evolved, the lack of technology available for recording, Beaver, and all of their contemporaries were a part of something huge.

This is mandatory if you love hardcore.

Halbstarke Jungs, established in 2008, are an antifascist streetcore band from Germany. From http://oioimusicblog.wordpress.com/ :

For the non-German speakers, can you explain what your band name means?
No problem. Halbstarke is a German synonymous for young adults, that have always a big mouth, drink too much and think they can change the world. Like teenage years. In the end it is more an attitude for us… we don’t want to grow up so fast.

Halbstarke Jungs four tracks on this split are straight forward oi, punk and rock. Each song is packed with energy, rhythmic hooks and contain an aggressive, almost hardcore feel. 

Basti’s vocals are distinctive and when combined with engaging songwriting, Halbstarke Jungs ends up being a cut above the generic multitudes.

I can’t wait to hear more from Hablstarke Jungs. They have three splits in the works!

I won’t go into the long and complicated history that intertwines Last Resort and The Warriors. Just know that the Saxby and the Warriors carry some weight in England’s punk family tree.

TheWarriors side of this split LP features songs from various sessions over their career and includes a cover of a Last Resort’s “Violence in our Minds” and Cock Sparrer’s “Watch Your Back”. The Last Resort track is a revved up version (clocking in at 2:08), adding energy to a song that was brooding and violent at 3:04. A band I played in, Mr. Yuk, did a version of “Violence in our Minds”, so this has a special place in my heart.

The Warriors "Keep It Real" is a classic punk gem. A strong release from both sides of the split LP!

American Sharks are a three piece band from Austin Texas.  Nick Cornetti (Drums), Mike Hardin (Bass, Vocals) and Will Ellis (guitar) play stoner rock with a hardcore punk drive.

Stoner rock and hardcore punk are two things I love. Think FuManChu, drinking whiskey and starting fights. ‘Cept I think these guys just like to rock rather than fight. Check the video for “Overdrive” and you will see what I mean. Wish I was at the party in the video (actually I have been at parties like that - which is probably why I love the video/song so much).

American Sharks are deservedly going out on the road with CLUTH and THE SWORD. Before they do that tour, they will be warming Philadelphia up to their vibe at the Kung Fu Necktie on October 16th…

  

American Sharks caught me off guard. This self-titled cd is one of the great surprises for me in 2013. The nine tracks leave me wanting more! Their sound and lyrics are over the top and ridiculously enjoyable!
