Pigs "Gaffe" EP on Solar Flare Records

PIGS
“Gaffe”
10” EP
Released: October 15, 2013

I love Unsane. I remember seeing Unsane in Philly at the Khyber Pass every couple months in the 90s for quite a while. Dave Curran joined Unsane on bass in 1994. Everytime Unsane or Tar or Laughing Hyenas would play at the Khyber, I would drop everything to be there.

Dave Curran plays guitar and sings in PIGS. Jim Paradise plays drums and Andrew Schneider plays bass and sings.

I do not have their first album “You Ruin Everything”. So this EP is my starting point. And definitely not my stopping point. I need to obtain this 10" on vinyl (digital is nice and all, but I'm a vinyl junkie) and "You Ruin Everything" LP too.

PIGS take me back to my love affair with Amphetamine Reptile Records. Pigs use all the best influences from Cows, Unsane, Gods Bullies and even throw in some TAD for good measure (even though TAD was Sub Pop).

These three tracks are perfect noise rock songs. They have that venomous, chaotic feel that I so love from Unsane. “Gaffe” is loud and obnoxious even at low volumes.

PIGS "Gaffe" is fantastic.

Obituary in Wind Gap PA Oct 11 2013

Cheers to Skip.

He never backs down. He is not afraid to take the chances, to set up gigs no one else will. He brings bands to the Lehigh Valley no one else can, finds and secures new venues in an area of the world that isn't as blessed as Philadelphia. And Skip has been doing this relentlessly for decades.

Thanks Skip and Biz R Ent.

I'd also like to thank everyone who was at this show. I haven't been to a show with such a great atmosphere in a long time. It reminded me of an early 80s hardcore / punk show. There was  great diversity in the crowd. From the fashionable (I think some people took a few hours to get ready for this show) to the come as you are black t-shirt crowd. Long hair and no hair. Big and small. Punk, metal, hardcore, goth, stoner, death etc... you name the sub category, they were at this show. I met a ton of new people and had a great time. People were handing out flyers, demos, stickers, generally sharing their love of music whether or not they were in the bands playing today or not. It was refreshing to be a part of that. So thank you to the everyone at the show. It kind of felt like a "scene". Was handed demos from Dying Eyes of Sloth, Gutrot and Andy Stewart's bass demo. Cheers to this young lady for her musical passion.

Now onto the bands. Understand that all of the bands, not just Obituary and Strong Intention killed on this night. Thought every band deserves your support. Enjoy the photos and check out the bands facebook pages for more information.

Some quick observations:

  • Seeds of Perdition. I've been missing out on this Philly band. Where have I been?
  • Bethlehem's Decaysia simply stated, rip. One of my favorite local bands.
  • March To Victory's singer is a woman who has a killer guttural voice that could scare little children!
  • New Jersey's Ominous... Geez where the hell have I been. Loved this three piece aural assault.
  • Strong Intention is classic hardcore thrash metal. Love the singer's old school COC tattoo on his leg. We reminisced a bit about Raw Deal/Killing Time and Airport Music Hall.
  • Obituary. If you were there you understand nothing needs to be said. If you weren't, you should have been there. Legends playing like legends. Donald Tardy, Obituary's drummer, is one of my favorites. I could watch him play drums all day. Guitarist Trevor Perez is a gracious guy, besides the fact that guitar sound / style has been in my head since the first time I heard it back in what, 1989 or 1990. No one in death metal touches John's vocal delivery to this day.

Cheers,
Frank FOE

The Vibrators October 7 2013 at Penn Skate Allentown PA

Johnny Clap, being a made man, a goodfella, a wiseguy.... in the punk rock scene, not the mafia, hooked the Vibrators up with a last minute show on an open date. Literally, this show was announced six days before the gig.

For a Monday night, with less than a week's notice, this gig was amazing! Hell it was amazing no matter what the circumstances. Thanks to Chris at Penn Skate and Johnny for putting this together.

The following are photos of the VIBRATORS from the Allentown PA gig at PENN SKATE.

The following is a repost of the "On The Guest List" review I posted earlier this year!

The Vibrators "On The Guest List" LP

The Vibrators
On The Guest List LP/CD
Released:  May 7, 2013

Knox (guitar/vocals), Eddie (drums), Pete (bass) and Nigel (guitar) make up the core of the Vibrators on “On the Guest List”. For those not in the know, “Pure Mania” and “V2” are MANDATORY punk albums from 1977 and 1978. There really is no question. If you do not own them, you are not into punk.

“On The Guest List” brings in some equally legendary special guests to contribute to sixteen Vibrators tracks. Without question, “On The Guest List” will hold a place as one of my favorite LPs from 2013.

Top Five Reasons to own this LP/CD:

Reason #1 Eddie Spaghetti and Dan “Thunder” Bolton of the Supersuckers appear on “My Stalker”. I am a huge fan of the Supersuckers and Eddie Spaghetti. This track is a complete ripper, a classic whether you know who the Vibrators are, who the Supersuckers are or what punk is!

Reason #2 Ty Segall lending his guitar chops to “Automatic Lover” transforms the song beyond any expectations. I think this is a great opportunity. I appreciate the respect Knox and crew offer Ty Segall by involving him in this project. I also hope that many old punks will now be exposed to the tremendous talent that Ty Segall possesses.

Reason #3 Nicky Garratt of the UK Subs shreds up the guitars and bass on “The Ohio”.

Reason #4 “Birdland is Closed” is amazing with Ross the Boss of the Dictators. I can’t stop listening to this track. Makes me think many current bands have forgotten that music doesn’t have to be complicated to be great.

Reason #5 “On The Guest List” list feels like a classic album. This could have easily been a lame attempt at rehashing old songs with guests who don’t add anything to the song but their name. The Vibrators approached this from the right perspective and the result is remarkable. This could have sounded like a contract album, the last album of a record deal. Instead, “On The Guest List” is a fresh sounding, full album of sixteen songs that flow, yet have an inspired sound. Walter Lure, Brian James, Wayne Kramer, Stan Lee, Leonard Graves Phillips, Chris Spedding, Campino… are you kidding me… I can’t really even comprehend all the true legends involved in this project. This is mind-blowing.

Complete List of guests:

·         Walter Lure of The Heartbreakers

·         Chris Spedding

·         Ty Segall

·         Ross the Boss of the Dictators

·         Eddie Spaghetti and Dan “Thunder” Bolton of the Supersuckers

·         Nicky Garratt of UK Subs

·         Leonard Graves and Stan Lee of The Dickies

·         James Donovan and Lorne Behrman of The Dead Tricks

·         Mickey Finn of Cold Blue Rebels

·         Bill Davis of Dash Rip Rock

·         Tony Lovato of Mest

·         Wayne Kramer of MC5

·         Tomomi Nabana of Detroitseven

·         Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers

·         Campino of Die Toten Hosen

·         Brian James of the Damned

In July of 2013 look for "Slow Death", another Vibrators 7". This will feature "Slow Death" (Flamin' Groovies) and two new tracks ("Get Me A Beer" and "On My Way To Hell").

Cheers,
Frank FOE
