Transplants "In A Warzone" LP / CD

    TRANSPLANTS
    In A Warzone LP/CD
    Epitaph Records
    Released: June 25, 2013

I completely enjoy Rancid, Blink 182 and Transplants. “In A Warzone” is the Transplants 3rd LP. Transplants are Travis Barker (Blink 182), Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid) and Rob Aston.

I have read a few reviews of “In A Warzone” where there seems to be a critique that this isn’t as non-punk (elements of rap, ska, rock, pop...) as people expected and that this doesn’t seem like an avenue that Travis and Tim once used to do something different than Rancid and Blink 182.

I believe those authors are lost.

I listen to this album, like I do with all albums, with the hopes that whatever is in the grooves and/or files is a fantastic listen on whatever level.

"Completely Detach" touches a part of my brain that alters my sanity!

“In A Warzone” rips. Every song brings me a joy. The things I personally love from the Transplants are as follows:
    • the dissonance in the music - do you hear it... I love it!
    • the example of successfully making music that includes the members individual rich history (personal and musical) and the rich history of the music they are influenced by and channel into their own compositions
    • the feeling I get of complete elation when I hear a great album.

“When we started this band 13 years ago, we weren’t worried about who was going to like us,” states front-man Rob Aston. “We still aren’t. In A Warzone is more raw and stripped down than our previous releases. In my opinion, it’s our best album. It’s always been difficult to classify Transplants. But at the end of the day, we’re a punk rock band. We make whatever type of music we want.”

“In A Warzone” is one of the best records of 2013.

    Thin Lizzy "Thin Lizzy" LP

    THIN LIZZY
    “Thin Lizzy”

My Thin Lizzy timeline goes something like this…
    • 1966 I was born.

Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation Video

    • 1971 Thin Lizzy releases “Thin Lizzy”, which I do not hear in its entirety, needle drop from beginning to end, until 2013.
    Thin Lizzy - Then

    • 1976 I hear “Boys Are Back in Town” I purchase the K-Tel LP “Right On” so that I own that song. I bought K-tel compilation albums back then because that is what a young man buys with his allowance when he wants maximum value for his record collecting money in the 70s (plus the "chick" on the cover was "hot" to me at age 10).

    • During the 2000s Cobra and Jack convince me that I need to expand my Thin Lizzy collection beyond the hits ("Whiskey In A Jar", "Jailbreak", "Bad Reputation", "Do Anything You Want To"...), that I bought as 45s and Ktel records back in the 70s (along with bands like Cheap Trick, Bad Company and other disco and pop etc...). I begin my quest finding most of the LPs at Double Decker Records.

Thin Lizzy - Do Anything You Want To - Music Video

    • 2011 I get the opportunity to see Thin Lizzy at Penns Peak on their first gig in North America of the tour. See theMorning Call blog review of the AMAZING show here. I was blown away by the gig.  The kid on vocals did a fantastic job. The guitar playing was un-freaking-believable. My jaw dropped like some 70s cartoon symbol of shock.

    • 2012 Light in the Attic re-releases the Thin Lizzy debut that I have been unable to add to my collection. Somehow I miss out on it again.

    • 2013 I find “Thin Lizzy” still sealed at Double Decker. I check the website of Light in the Attic and see that the LP is out of stock. I am a lucky man.

From the Light in the Attic website:

When scrolling down a list of debut LPs by rock’s heaviest hitters, Thin Lizzy is as unheralded as they come. Long before the group’s trademark “twin-guitar” sound was born and anthems like “The Boys Are Back In Town” became instant hall-of-fame material, the street tough Irish group was a dynamic power trio consisting of guitarist Eric Bell, singing bass player Philip Lynott, and sticksman Brian Downey. Forming only a year before their monumental signing to world-famous Decca Records, Thin Lizzy fused folk, hard rock, lyrical poetry, and a dose of Celtic lore in a heady brew that despite its potency, sold poorly at the time of release. Often ignored apart from hardcore Lizzy devotees around the globe, Light In The Attic is incredibly proud to produce a much-needed vinyl-only re-release of Thin Lizzy.

If you’ve never heard Thin Lizzy, we won’t hold it against you. “Honesty Is No Excuse,” “Look What The Wind Blew In,” and “Return Of The Farmer’s Son” are certified underground classics making original Decca copies of the album a collector’s prize. Rich in vibe and vibrations, this is the type of record one hangs onto. Now is your chance to enjoy this crucial music at a reasonable price. To sweeten the pot, the lowdown is as follows: Original master tape transferring by Sterling Sound and re-mastering by Dave Cooley (Elysian Masters), 180-gram virgin black vinyl, original album art reproduction (both UK and US versions), extensive liner notes by reissue producer Kevin “Sipreano” Howes (Jamaica-Toronto series, Rodriguez Cold Fact and Coming From Reality, Monks, Mowest anthology) featuring a recent in-depth interview with Eric Bell, and unseen archival imagery.

Don’t worry rock freaks; this one is for the black and blues lovers, midnight ravers, and parking lot bangers. We don’t take this mammoth responsibility lightly. Phil, Eric, and Brian and the legions of diehard Thin Lizzy supporters deserve the best and our best we’ve given. It’s funny how 1971 can sound so contemporary, a testament to the music, power, strength, feeling, and sensitivity of Thin Lizzy, three out-of-their-heads Dublin rockers who gave their heart and soul for a monster dose of rock and roll, influencing thousands upon thousands right up to the present.

Thanks for the music good fellows.
    First official vinyl reissue
24 bit / 96 kHz remaster from the original tapes
Deluxe gatefold “Tip-On” jacket featuring both the original Decca and London album covers
    180-gram vinyl
Book-deep liner notes by Kevin “Sipreano” Howes interviewing Eric Bell and featuring rare archive photos
    Includes bonus over-sized 18″×24″ poster

    Thin Lizzy - Now

Obtain, enjoy the music and the history. The packaging and sound is spectacular. This is awesome even though there were no "hits" on this debut. Jack and Cobra were right and so am I.

And might I suggest, if you are at the beginning of your Thin Lizzy timeline, don't start with the K-tel records... start with the hits off "Dedication - The Very Best of Thin Lizzy" and then get working on collecting the entire catalog.

    Cheers,
    Frank FOE

    Havok "Unnatural Selection" CD

    HAVOK
    Unnatural Selection
    Released: June 25, 2013

Denver Colorado’s HAVOK end the song “Give Me Liberty… or Give Me Death” with the Thomas Jefferson quote:

“When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.
When the government fears the people, there is liberty.”

The entirety of “Unnatural Selection” is bursting with a similar ferocity to the lead single, “Give Me Liberty…” that compliments their musicality, attitude and anger. Much like vintage Megadeth, HAVOK combines a yesteryear punk rock anger with a thrash metal attack typical of the genre’s zenith.

While vintage Megadeth is the starting point, HAVOK remain at the forefront of the current thrash metal genre with a fresh and talented approach. They out Megadeth, Megadeth. Slot HAVOK right alongside Anthrax, Overkill, Kreator and Testament.

The musicality of HAVOK is technical, yet enjoyable. The drums run like a high end, precision watch, keeping perfect beat for the raging and creative guitar work. HAVOK is guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez, bassist Mike Leon, guitarist Reece Scruggs, and drummer Pete Webber and they all rule on “Unnatural Selection”.

Nice cover of Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave".

    Cheers,
    Frank FOE

The Vibrators "On The Guest List" LP

    The Vibrators
    On The Guest List LP/CD
    Released:  May 7, 2013

Knox (guitar/vocals), Eddie (drums), Pete (bass) and Nigel (guitar) make up the core of the Vibrators on “On the Guest List”. For those not in the know, “Pure Mania” and “V2” are MANDATORY punk albums from 1977 and 1978. There really is no question. If you do not own them, you are not into punk.

“On The Guest List” brings in some equally legendary special guests to contribute to sixteen Vibrators tracks. Without question, “On The Guest List” will hold a place as one of my favorite LPs from 2013.

Top Five Reasons to own this LP/CD:

Reason #1 Eddie Spaghetti and Dan “Thunder” Bolton of the Supersuckers appear on “My Stalker”. I am a huge fan of the Supersuckers and Eddie Spaghetti. This track is a complete ripper, a classic whether you know who the Vibrators are, who the Supersuckers are or what punk is!

Reason #2 Ty Segall lending his guitar chops to “Automatic Lover” transforms the song beyond any expectations. I think this is a great opportunity. I appreciate the respect Knox and crew offer Ty Segall by involving him in this project. I also hope that many old punks will now be exposed to the tremendous talent that Ty Segall possesses.

Reason #3 Nicky Garratt of the UK Subs shreds up the guitars and bass on “The Ohio”.

Reason #4 “Birdland is Closed” is amazing with Ross the Boss of the Dictators. I can’t stop listening to this track. Makes me think many current bands have forgotten that music doesn’t have to be complicated to be great.

Reason #5 “On The Guest List” list feels like a classic album. This could have easily been a lame attempt at rehashing old songs with guests who don’t add anything to the song but their name. The Vibrators approached this from the right perspective and the result is remarkable. This could have sounded like a contract album, the last album of a record deal. Instead, “On The Guest List” is a fresh sounding, full album of sixteen songs that flow, yet have an inspired sound. Walter Lure, Brian James, Wayne Kramer, Stan Lee, Leonard Graves Phillips, Chris Spedding, Campino… are you kidding me… I can’t really even comprehend all the true legends involved in this project. This is mind-blowing.

    Complete List of guests:

    ·         Walter Lure of The Heartbreakers

    ·         Chris Spedding

    ·         Ty Segall

    ·         Ross the Boss of the Dictators

    ·         Eddie Spaghetti and Dan “Thunder” Bolton of the Supersuckers

    ·         Nicky Garratt of UK Subs

    ·         Leonard Graves and Stan Lee of The Dickies

    ·         James Donovan and Lorne Behrman of The Dead Tricks

    ·         Mickey Finn of Cold Blue Rebels

    ·         Bill Davis of Dash Rip Rock

    ·         Tony Lovato of Mest

    ·         Wayne Kramer of MC5

    ·         Tomomi Nabana of Detroitseven

    ·         Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers

    ·         Campino of Die Toten Hosen

    ·         Brian James of the Damned

In July of 2013 look for "Slow Death", another Vibrators 7". This will feature "Slow Death" (Flamin' Groovies) and two new tracks ("Get Me A Beer" and "On My Way To Hell").

    Cheers,
    Frank FOE
