Society Sucker 7"

Society Sucker
"Society Sucker" 7"/download
Get This Right Records
Released: September 16, 2014

Being in my very late 40s, the first thing I think of when I hear "Society Sucker" is Agnostic Front. AF has had a major impact on my life since the the early 80s. "Society Sucker" is of course one of Agnostic Front's greatest songs.

Keeping that hardcore history in mind, if you name your band Society Sucker, you have to bring the goods, else you open yourself up to some pretty harsh rips.

No worries. North Carolina based Society Sucker, brings the hardcore brutality. As an old hardcore guy, I appreciate this and love this record. The band is also influenced by later hardcore and metal, even using that upside down cymbal breakdown initiator thing that bands used in the 90s/00s before they hit the groove mosh. The Steven Kulesza artwork even has a Sean Taggart feel.

Give it a listen at their bandcamp page: http://societysucker.bandcamp.com/

Society Sucker is built for extricating and relieving what ails you, at least temporarily. This is "dance music", if you will. Expertly crafted and recorded to provide for the ritualistic cathartic release of your poison.

Cheers,
Frank FOE

Morrissey, being a big Ramones fan, particularly of the early years, had always wanted to compile a "best of" album and this year he got his wish. This compilation reflects Morrissey's experience of listening to the band for the first time. With the sad passing of Tommy recently, both management and Morrissey felt this was a fitting tribute. The use of the Union Jack on the cover reflects both how important the band were to the UK music scene but also how the UK embraced them and their sound. The photo on the back cover by Danny Fitzgerald is evocative of the period and was selected by Morrissey.

MANNEQUIN PUSSY "Gypsy Pervert" Tiny Engines

MANNEQUIN PUSSY
"Gypsy Pervert"
Tiny Engines
Released: September 9, 2014

Marisa Dabice (guitar/vocals) and Thanasi Paul (guitar) began Mannequin Pussy as a duo. As their facebook page cites, they are childhood pals turned degenerates. The band expanded to a three-piece for their debut album, "Gypsy Pervert" adding Kaleen Reading on drums.

Ten songs in under twenty minutes is always an indicator that I will enjoy a record. Having a band name like Mannequin Pussy is also a pretty good sign that something pretty special is going down.

Mannequin Pussy are currently based in Philly, transplanted from NY. I have plenty of Philly ties, so that works for me too.

"Gypsy Pervert" has the trio blasting through a variety of influences and styles with raucous ease. "Someone Like You" is a shoegaze gem and "Clit Eastwood" adds a western feel. "My Baby (Axe Nice)" is a garage bubblegum classic, somewhere between the Muffs and Supersnazz.

The video for "My Baby (Axe Nice)" is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyaJfekUrJw

"Clue Juice" is a freaking classic punk, lo-fi, raging release of energy. The video for "Clue Juice" is here: http://vimeo.com/83519360

"Terror No" could have been an oi song, think Infa Riot, interpreted by Slant 6, recorded in a basement. "Meat Slave 2" brings to mind Velocity Girl at times. "Piss Drinker" is moody, dark and brooding. "Sneaky Nips" is garage thrash at its finest. There are Superchunk-like blasts all over the ten tracks.

"Gypsy Pervert" fits. I do not want to give the impression that Mannequin Pussy is just trying to find their way or trying too hard to be different. Quite the opposite. The raw diversification of the songs comes across as pure, real, unadulterated, expressive fun. This is genuine, enjoyable and the balance of lo-fi gutter rawness is perfectly matched by the sweetness.

Just in case I don't get around to making a top list of 2014, I want you to know this would be on my list if I made such a list.

Vinyl ordered.

Obliterations "Poison Everything"

OBLITERATIONS
"Poison Everything"
Southern Lord
Released: October 14, 2014

If Siege and Jay Reatard had joined forces, it would probably sound like Obliterations "Poison Everything". The garage feel meeting the blistering thrash of Siege is wonderful to hear in 2014. Makes me think Jay Reatard should have covered Siege's "Walls".

"Shame" has a vintage Motorhead evil groove and "The Narcisist" even has a Lemmy vocal tribute. "Mind Ain't Right" and "Normalized Decline" have a killer "Boston Not LA" feel, recalling Gang Green and Jerry's Kids.

Throw in some Poison Idea, early Corrosion of Conformity, along with Japanese, Swedish and early 80s Midwest hardcore influences and I am simply loving what the Obliterations are creating.

Love the video for "Mind Ain't Right", which was shot and directed by Rick Rodney (Strife), and edited by Zach Marshall. These guys killed it, matching still photography perfectly with the soaring and raging song.  "Mind Ain't Right" should be checked out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D38aT4BbvDs

Obliterations are from Los Angeles California and I would imagine they love the "Boston Not LA" and "Cleanse the Bacteria" compilations as much as I do.

Cheers,
Frank FOE
