Snatch "I.R.T./Stanley" 7"

SNATCH
"I.R.T. / Stanley" 7"
Bomp! or Lightning
Released: 1977

Judy Nylon, Patti Palladin and Captain Sensible.

In my quest to revisit the musical history I have missed, Snatch found me, appropriately after I finally saw the Damned in 2014. Damned guitarist Captain Sensible reported plays on this 7".

Love the bitching at Stanley to take out the garbage as the intro to "Stanley". Love they say "Pussy Galore" in the song.

The lyrics I have made out so far on "I.R.T." have something to do with the perverts that Snatch runs into on the Interborough Rapid Transit.

This is real deal, down and dirty punk in 1977.

According to punk77 http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/snatchpatti.htm Patti Palladin worked with everyone from Chris Spedding, Johnny Thunders and the Flying Lizards. Supposedly, those are Patti's teeth on Skrewdriver's "All Skrewed Up".

Judy Nylon sang back up on "The Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy" by John Cale http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/snatchJudy.htm.

In any event, I love digging in to the history of music and this stuff is fascinating.

Cheers,

Fugazi "First Demo" LP

FUGAZI
"First Demo"
Dischord Records
Released: November 18, 2014

Recorded in January 1988, this "demo" is better than most music you will hear that is released "officially", rather than just as a "demo".

The fact that Ian dramatically changed music with not one, but two bands (Minor Threat and Fugazi), in completely different ways, is sick. Inspirational.

I still remember the first time I saw Fugazi. Twenty five years later, all I remember was that it was in some parking garage in Philly. I never had a flyer for the show and couldn't remember exactly where this gig was. Thankfully the internet serves as my memory.

So glad I made the trip to Philly that day.

So glad two and half decades later this demo made it to vinyl.

Not sure what the reason is, but "First Demo" sounds like the best Fugazi record ever made. Maybe it is because I haven't listened to an entire Fugazi LP in quite some time or I am swimming in nostalgia, but this STILL sounds groundbreaking and just feels so good!

If you know Fugazi and love, or even just like Fugazi, get this. You will not be disappointed in this "demo". Fantastic record. If you don't know Fugazi, I would say this is a very appropriate place to begin. Intricate, intense, enjoyable and creative.

The Normal "T.V.O.D." / "Warm Leatherette 7"

The Normal
"T.V.O.D." / "Warm Leatherette" 7"
Mute Records
Released: May 1978

This 7" was the first record released on Mute.

Daniel Miller is the founder of Mute and The Normal was his project.

The first Mute record I purchased when it was actually released was Depeche Mode's "Speak and Spell" LP in 1981. Yazoo's "Upstairs at Eric's" was the second. Both are among my favorite new wave records and had a tremendous impact me.

"T.V.O.D." / "Warm Leatherette" was later released as a 12" and  "5 Inch CD Single".

The minimalistic new wave, historical impact and the punk/alternative lyrical perspective will keep this record in the classic category forever.

"Warm Leatherette"

See the breaking glass
In the underpass
See the breaking glass
In the underpass
Warm leatherette
Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel
Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Melts on your burning flesh
You can see your reflection
In the luminescent dash
Warm leatherette
A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick - Let's make love
Before you die
On warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Join the car crash set

I don't need a TV screen
I just stick the aerial into my skin
let the signal run through my veins

Godflesh "A World Lit Only By Fire" LP Avalanche

GODFLESH
"A World Lit Only By Fire"
Avalanche Inc
Released: October 7, 2014

In 1989, Earache Records introduced me to Godflesh. The label sent me a cassette of "Streetcleaner" and my mind was blown.

In late 2014, Dave Weston and I were discussing the best of 2014, and he asked me if I had gotten "A World Lit Only By Fire" yet. I hadn't, so upon Dave's recommendation,  I immediately searched for a copy of the vinyl to purchase and my mind was blown again.

Heavy, dark, apocalyptic, punishing, industrial strength metal that has set the bar for the genre.  The sound on the vinyl is simply amazing. A powerful mood changer.

Head over to the bandcamp page (or in the player below) and give "A World Lit Only By Fire" a listen: http://godflesh1.bandcamp.com/album/a-world-lit-only-by-fire

"Obeyed"
Permission / Is Exclusive
Inclusive / But Denied
Rules / Are Exclusive
For Which / You're Excluded
Listen / You're Alone
You're A Cog / In Their Machine
You Won't / Make a Difference
You Will Never / Make a Difference

"A World Lit Only By Fire" is as mandatory in 2014 as "Streetcleaner" was in 1989 (and still is).

Godflesh is BC Green - bass and JK Broadrick - guitar, voice, machines.

Nots "We Are Nots" LP

NOTS
"We Are Nots"
Goner Records
Released: November 11, 2014

Nots are from Memphis Tennessee.

Nots blast through 11 songs in 27 minutes on "We Are Nots".

I love their DC, Post Punk, Spacey, driving noise punk rock. I hear hardcore-era Devo, vintage Sonic Youth and hardcore in Nots. This band kills.

Check out their video of "Decadence" at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIcZBqTbbLE#t=89 and get your ass kicked.

Natalie Hoffmann (guitar), Charlotte Watson (drums), Madison Farmer (bass) and Alexandra Eastburn (synthesizer) have put together an amazing, creative and driving record. I love "We Are Nots". I love Nots. I sure hope I get the opportunity to see Nots live in the not to distant future.

Thank you Goner. Thank you Nots.

Cheers,
Frank FOE

The DiPaolos' 2014 Demo

The Di Paolos'

Di Paolo 13 - Bass, vocals, vandalism
Showtime at the Di Paolo - Drums, vocals
Di Paolo Creed - guitars, hand claps

Please give a listen to some friends of mine who got together in 2014 and recorded a demo. If you are from the Lehigh Valley PA, you know The DiPaolos' members. You have seen their previous bands. I've been in bands with them. You may have been in bands with them as well.

They sent me their demo.

I asked them if I could share it with you.

They agreed.

Click the song title to listen/download.

The DiPaolos' hit my ears with a sound that I imagine the Original Sins might have created if they lived at 411 on the Southside of Bethlehem in the late 80s.

Stream. Download. Share. Enjoy.

Cheers,
Frank FOE
